George Timmons

George Timmons, PhD, is the former dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Excelsior College. In this role, he worked with the School’s faculty program directors, academic advisors and staff to facilitate and nurture academic excellence. In addition, he was instrumental in building infrastructure and managing the activities that support the growth and development of Excelsior College’s online education program. Dr. Timmons has skills in web-based learning management, developing academic policy, managing curriculum, and developing academic programs. His expertise is in managing distance learning programs, adult/continuing education, and overseeing learning services. His focus is on achieving results by convening stakeholders, facilitating consensus, and using empirical information to form initiatives, meeting strategic organizational goals. He is committed to mutually beneficial processes and shared governance through the clear communication of issues, goals, and strategies. He served as a American Council Education Fellow (class 2013) a prestigious program design to develop professionals for senior leadership roles in higher education. Finally, he considers himself to be an open, collaborative leader with the ability to engage dialogue across constituencies. He has served as dean of online education and learning serves at Excelsior College, assistant dean at North Carolina Wesleyan College and site director at Old Dominion University (VA). Timmons received his PhD in higher education from Bowling Green State University (OH), his MS in student affairs from Old Dominion University (VA), and his BS in finance from Norfolk State University (VA). He also attended the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education.
