Excelsior Named a “Best for Vets” College and Top Military-Friendly School for 2012

For the second year in a row, Excelsior College has been named a “Best for Vets” college by Military Times Edge magazine. Excelsior is an accredited, nonprofit distance learning college based in Albany, N.Y.

Military Times Edge surveyed 500 veteran students who commended Excelsior’s centralized services for veterans, transfer credit policies, and staff knowledge of veterans’ issues as top qualities of the 40-year-old college.

“These two recognitions underscore what we already know: Excelsior is a college of excellence for veterans and servicemembers,” said Susan Dewan, executive director of the Excelsior Center for Military Education. “We have been serving the military and veterans for four decades with increasing dedication and expertise, and will continue to do so – especially as more military members are transitioning to civilian life in growing numbers.”

The recognition follows GIJobs’ designation of Excelsior as a top military friendly college for 2012, the third consecutive year that the College has received this designation. GIJobs honors colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to support veterans as students.

Excelsior offers degree programs through online coursework, credit by examination, and certain transfer credit from colleges, universities, and military training programs. Veterans and servicemembers have access to streamlined services through the Excelsior Center for Military Education in Albany, N.Y., on certain military installations, and at Excelsior’s Washington, DC Center in the Nation’s Capital.

In addition to its academic programs, Excelsior’s Career Center provides support for members of the military and veterans seeking assistance with the transition to civilian employment. The Excelsior Center for Professional Development (CPD) also offers a range of professional training programs that are popular among military members, veterans, and military spouses. Many CPD programs qualify for veterans education benefits.
