Passionate Pursuit: Excelsior employee participates in row-a-thon for cancer

The purpose of Excelsior Life’s Passionate Pursuits stories is to help shine a light on faculty and staff successfully balancing work, home and family – just like our students.

During the day, Amy Student works at Excelsior College as a course registration associate. Outside of work, she is a participating in a row-a-thon to fund men’s cancer research and health. She shares her passionate pursuit with Excelsior Life.

Amy StudentExcelsior Life: How did you get involved in the row-a-thon? Student: This is just one of the many fund-raisers my gym, Crossfit Aevitas, has hosted over the past few months! Given my love for anything fitness, I thought this would be a great opportunity to not only show off my enormous leg strength, but also change the lives of hundreds of men suffering from prostate and testicular cancer.

Excelsior Life: What motivated you to participate? Student: Aside from my love for the rowing machine, I am really excited to work for such a great cause. Sometimes men’s health can lose spotlight following Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I feel it is just as important to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer screenings and research as well.

Excelsior Life: Do you have a personal connection to the cause? Student: Thankfully, no one I know has ever suffered from either testicular or prostate cancer, but that does not mean this cause does not hold a special place in my heart. I hope by spreading the word and raising money, we are able to help hundreds get the care they need to live long lives with their own families and friends.

Amy Student2Excelsior Life: Where can others learn more information? Student: If you would like to make a donation please visit my Movember site at

Visit the CrossFit Aevitas Facebook page for more info on the event and how your donations can make a difference.

If you are a fan of rowing and want to watch Student’s team, please feel free to stop by the gym on Saturday, November 21 at 1 Charles Blvd in Guilderland, New York from 10 am – 12 pm. There will be music, vendors, raffles and a whole lot of rowing.
